Leon Russell the Leonberger, Therapy Dog in Training
Leon Russell, the Leonberger, is Wellspring Psychology’s therapy dog in training, following in the footsteps of Sweet Lyla, Wellsprings first and beloved therapy dog, who passed away in 2017. The Leonberger breed, which originated in Germany in the late 19th century, is known for its majestic appearance, large size, and gentle demeanor. With their kind nature, intelligence, and serene patience, Leonbergers make excellent therapy dogs—qualities that made Leon a perfect addition to both the Maddox and Wellspring families.
Since puppyhood, Leon has been training under the wisdom and guidance of Raschel Hutton, a skilled local psychology-based dog trainer, with the hopes of one day becoming a certified therapy dog. His goal is to support his handler, Shaylin Maddox, LMFT, in her work with patients through Canine-Assisted Therapy.
Canine-Assisted Therapy involves using trained dogs to support an individual’s physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. In this therapeutic approach, dogs and their handlers work with clients to promote mental and physical health. This therapy leverages the natural bond between humans and dogs to create a supportive and healing environment, with primary goals including reducing stress and anxiety, improving mood, and enhancing social interactions. Interacting with a therapy dog can lower blood pressure, release endorphins, and positively impact mental and physical
health, often resulting in reduced stress levels, improved mood, increased motivation for rehabilitation, and an enhanced quality of life.
Though Leon possesses many natural qualities suited for Canine-Assisted Therapy, he, like all of us, has room to grow and flourish in his role. Naturally shy, Leon is unlikely to ever be the Lab of the party. His current training focuses on building confidence and neutrality in both familiar and new situations. When working, you’ll find Leon by Shaylins side at Wellspring, spreading healthy doses of happiness and healing to patients and staff. If you see him around the office, questions, and waves are welcome, but as part of his training, petting is reserved for those in session.
Off the clock, Leon enjoys romping with his German Shepherd sister, Mae, snuggling with his family, staying curious about his feline siblings, and soaking up Santa Cruz Mountain living.
